Back to the Gym

I got into a pretty good groove my last couple of years teaching. After switching from a training center to a regular school I found myself spending more time at work but less time actually working. I usually had more free time during the time I was at work than I did at the training center. That included lunch which was usually at least two hours long. Eventually I realized that was the perfect time to go to the gym.

I could eat at the beginning of the lunch break, grab my stuff and head to the gym, work out, take a shower, go back to school, and have a protein shake all before afternoon classes started. It was pretty great. The only problem was it didn’t work so well during vacations and covid school closures because the gym was near the school. It wasn’t far from my apartment but it was far enough I often couldn’t will myself to go.

Unfortunately when I changed jobs a couple of months ago I lost my nice long lunch break. I now work a more typical office job. The lunch break is still longer than back in the USA but it’s not quite long enough to also go to the gym unless the gym was right next to the office. And there’s no gym anywhere close. Switching jobs also made me have to reorganize a lot of my time to be able to get all my content ready for the week. Because I was trying to do that figuring out martial arts classes and the gym got put on the back burner. I’ve started going back to some martial arts classes, although not as many as I’d like, and last week I started the process of getting back to the gym.

When I was teaching I went to the gym during lunch. That meant my gym options were limited because wherever I went needed to be pretty close to the school. Now that’s not a problem. I’m going to try, and hopefully succeed for more than a week, to go to the gym on my way home from work. That means I can look for gyms anywhere between work and my apartment. So I spent last week after work checking out gyms near the metro stations on my way home. They were a mixed bag but I picked one and tomorrow I’m going to try to get back into the swing of things. Fingers crossed I can keep it up.


I’m not entirely convinced I’ll be able to keep up the gym after work. I finish work at 6 and don’t usually get home until after 7 and I have a VERY hard time motivating myself to do anything. So stopping on my way home to go to the gym could be a big ask. Wish me luck.
