Tai Chi Blog 6 - Cleaning Up the Form
Another tai chi class in the books. We worked on that sort of warm-up set we had done before that I couldn’t remember. Luckily this time I filmed some of it so I can practice them. Unluckily there were more so it’s going to be harder to remember them all. I wonder if there are more we haven’t learned yet.
As for the class we continued to practice difficult parts of the form since we’ve learned the entire thing. We worked the part right after the first arm break which is a little confusing. I had trouble figuring out exactly where the arms went and how they went there. I definitely feel a little better about it now but it’s definitely far from perfect.
Another part we worked on was leading up to the kicks with the move that looks like you’re opening a curtain. The kicks themselves I still struggle with because I’m not strong or flexible enough to do them but we were practicing the part before them. We worked a bunch on the rotation and hand movement of the lower body and hands leading up to the kicks. This part wasn’t as hard as the part after the arm break but there was definitely some nuance there I was missing. And still am.
All in all I’m really liking doing the whole form first and then going back to focus on difficult parts. The alternative, like we do in wing chun, is where we learn the form much slower and focus on each part as we’re learning. That’s probably the better method but I personally like learning a bunch first then going back.
Tai chi, like JKD and wing chun, is chugging along. I definitely don’t feel like I’m good but I definitely feel like I’m starting to make progress.
