How Much Did I Spend in Tokyo?

I’ll be honest. I don’t usually budget when I travel. Or ever. Which is probably why I don’t have much money…

Anyway I don’t usually budget when I travel but I do usually try not to spend too much money. But I did start to wonder how much I was spending. So when I went to Tokyo I decided to keep track of how much I spent.

All told, by the end of the trip I spent ¥29,189 yen, which is around $271.46, plus $474.57 on my flight. Altogether that comes to about $746.03. To get everything in dollars I used the exchange rates for the month I went on the trip. If you’re interested in seeing where all the money went check out the video.

If not I’ve broken down the amount I spend below based on categories.

Food - ¥12,402 or ≈$115.34

Food is where I usually spend a lot of money. There were meals every day, plus snacks when I got hungry, and coffee. Lots of coffee.

Travel and Lodging - ≈$567.64

This was split between a couple of things. First my flight from Hong Kong which made up more than half the cost of the trip at ≈$474.57. Then two nights at a capsule hotel for ¥5707 or ≈$53.08 (neither of which I used…) plus a Passmo card and tickets for riding the subway which cost ¥4300 or ≈$40. I likely forgot a couple of train tickets so this number could be a little bit higher. It’s not as high as expected though because we used points for the hotel we stayed in which kept costs down.

Souvenirs - ¥6780 or ≈$63.06

I don’t usually buy too much stuff when I travel. It keeps costs down and means I don’t need to try to get it back home. I did pick up some small things though and the Goshuincho book was comparatively expensive.

I’ve gone on some expensive trips but Tokyo wasn’t too pricey. The plane ticket was surprisingly costly but most of the things we did (like visit the Imperial Palace Gardens) was free and we didn’t need to pay for a hotel so overall the trip wasn’t too expensive.
