Wuxing Stunt Team - Fight Videos part 2
This was the opposite of Tourist vs. Expat. Where TvE started slow but we learned a lot and made better videos, going to the Wuxing Stunt School ended up being sort of a lost opportunity. I discovered it when Tre (who I mentioned in the last post) posted a video from there. It was awesome. Him and another guy. Big room with what looked like a springy floor. Doing a cool fight. I had to know what was up. He introduced me to the guy who was sort of running the sort of classes on the weekend. Near the end of 2019 I started going out on the weekend. It was way out in Baoan but it seemed like a pretty legit stunt school. Springy floor, props, costumes, wires. All that plus there was a pretty solid core group of guys going out. I was really excited. Like…REALLY excited. The first one or two times I went it was awesome. We did lots of cool stuff. But after that it kind of fizzled and for some reason not much came of it. I could probably write an entire post about what I think went wrong but I don’t want to ruffle any feathers. Suffice to say we just never seemed to be working on fight videos all that much.
We did manage two though. The first, the poorly titled “Don’t Steal Stuff,” (I really need to come up with a better name for that one), wasn’t even originally a fight video. We’d made it as a commercial originally. That’s why it’s so short. This is sort of what I was talking about above. Always doing something else. We had spent a day working on some choreography because we wanted a fight in the commercial to sort of represent us. When it went nowhere I wasn’t willing to lose the work so I cut out some stuff from the beginning and the end to make it just a short video. That’s why it’s so short.
The second, ‘Water Wars,’ I was pretty happy with. It’s got no audio though, just music. That’s because there was construction going on so the audio was unusable. One of the last days we were at the school before Chinese New Year vacation we decided to film something. We came up with a tiny bit of fight real quick then went outside to find somewhere to film. Since we did it all in one day we didn’t really have time to come up with too much choreography. I think it would have been better if we’d spent a couple of weeks working on it so we could have had more depth to fights. It did have some parts I was really happy with though. The sequence at the beginning when Tre steals my water came out great. And I thought recruiting random people to walk by as we were doing the slow motion was pretty funny. It also turned out to be good that we didn’t spend a couple of weeks on it. We filmed it in the middle of January 2020 if I remember correctly then broke for Chinese New Year vacation. When we got back everything was closed because of COVID. And unfortunately I have’t been back since. I don’t think anyone has. Had we waited it never would have gotten done.
You win some and you lose some I guess. While the Wuxing experiment didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to turn out I still got to make make some stuff, meet some cool people, and make some friends.
