JKD Vlog 4 - Head Movement

JKD is still going pretty well although the classes in this video were pretty varied; one normal sized, one huge, and one very small. Jumping around that much is definitely a little weird because the feel of them is so different. You get a lot more attention in smaller classes which is good but I feel like sometimes we do more stuff in them as well. Since the instructor can see everyone quicker we can move on to more stuff quicker as well. Sometimes this is good and sometimes it’s less good.

We did a lot of work on different hand combos in these classes which was great for me. We did some jabs around an opponent which helped me focus on moving while I fight. Since I tend to kick a lot I fight a little farther back from my opponent and don’t move as much as I should. We also did a bunch of work on combos with crosses and hooks like jab, cross, hook and cross, hook, cross. An interesting thing we did was use the cross as a distancing tool to sort of keep an opponent from getting too close. That was new for me since I’d always used a jab for that. Unfortunately I’m still having some trouble with distancing on the hooks but I’m working on it.

I did get told my jab was getting better which is great but I still need to work on my cross. The instructor says that I don’t use it enough so I have to work on it more. I also have to figure out how to use it without walking into punches. So I’m still trying to box more in class and rely on my kicks a little bit less. Going forward that’s definitely still my biggest goal.

Of course there was kicking. One thing we practiced was using kicks as part of combos. For example throwing a roundhouse kick after a jab or after some of the combos I mentioned above. In class we were alternating hands/legs and I kept messing up by using the same leg as my last punch. Probably less important in a fight but I looked pretty dumb in class.

JKD classes are still going strong and since they’re on the weekend they conflict with my work schedule less than my other classes so that probably won’t change going forward. Wish me luck working on my boxing!
