JKD Vlog 3 - Lots of Kicks
The classes from the first two videos were no stranger to sparring drills. We did some in most classes but it was limited to punching. Most of what we did didn’t involve legs and focused exclusively on punching. The classes in this video changed that up a little. We kept up with he kicking we started practicing a lot of in the second vlog but started adding it to our sparring.
We did some blocking practice too. One was a muay thai style block for low and middle kicks and the other was a block with the arms for higher kicks. Both seemed pretty good although I find I have trouble judging which kick is coming in.
We were throwing our arm down when we were kicking. I’m not entirely sure the reason. I suspect it has something to do with body rotation but I didn’t love it. It seems to leave too much of you open. I prefer to throw the elbow to keep my hand close enough to guard a little. That being said I’ve watched some videos of me kicking recently and my arms go all over the place. So I’ve uh…gotta work on that.
We did some sweeps for the first time in one class. The sweeps from roundhouses were similar to what I’ve done back in tang soo do but the front kick sweep (sort of) was definitely new to me. Unfortunately I’m still pretty bad at sweeps.
I realized during these classes that I like pad drills where the pad holder throws some attacks that the pad hitter needs to avoid or block. I find I zone out a little bit when I’m doing pad work and just hitting them. The threat of taking a pad in my face keeps me more focused and I think better represents how sparring and fights work.
My JKD training has been going great, even if it is making me realize I’m starting to get old. I’ve been shaking all that rust off and getting back into the swing of things and overall really just enjoying being back to martial arts. Here’s hoping getting back to work doesn't get in the way
